Profile

Jonathan Davies has established himself as a mainstay in the centres in both the Wales and Scarlets XV and could yet break into the British & Irish Lions set-up for next summer's trip to Australia.

He was born in the West Midlands but moved to Carmarthenshire, Wales, with his family at an early age. The centre made his way through the ranks at Llanelli from a young age and was eventually promoted to the Scarlets squad in 2006. He made his debut for the Welsh region against Northampton in August 2006.

Davies received his first call up to the Wales squad for their tour of North American during the summer of 2009, with a number of Wales' frontline backs touring South Africa with the British and Irish Lions. His debut came in the first match of the tour against Canada.

He was subsequently named in Wales' squad for the 2009 autumn internationals and made appearances against Samoa and Argentina, but he returned to the periphery of the squad for the following Six Nations. He remained behind the likes of Jamie Roberts, James Hook and Tom Shanklin for Wales' tour of New Zealand in the summer of 2010 and their autumn campaign later in the year.

However, Davies took his chance in the 2011 Six Nations with Shanklin out injured and Hook deployed increasingly at fly-half. A succession of strong performances alongside Roberts in the Welsh midfield raised his profile and was one of the more impressive centres in the tournament.

And Davies kept his form going for the 2011 World Cup. He started six of their seven games in the tournament and scored an impressive three tries in the process - against Namibia, Fiji and Ireland. Their campaign eventually ended in heart-break when they lost to France but the centre made up for it with a series of storming performances in the 2012 Six Nations.

The Grand Slam-winning side had Davies to thank for their win over Ireland with the centre scoring two tries. And he started the next four matches forming a lethal partnership with Jamie Roberts.

He kept his place in the side for their summer tour of Australia and started all three of their Tests - scoring a try in the second - but the team returned back to Wales with no wins from their three matches against the Wallabies. Wales' poor form continued into the autumn internationals but they returned to their best to retain their Six Nations crown with Davies playing an increasingly influential role.

His form for Wales saw him selected for the British & Irish Lions' tour to Australia. Davies was one of the stand-out performers of the opening games of the tour and was rewarded with a starting berth in the opening two Tests alongside Brian O'Driscoll. And when fellow Welsh centre Jamie Roberts returned for the final test, it was Davies, controversially to some, who was selected alongside him. Davies' selection was ultimately vindicated as he helped the Lions to an historic 2-1 series triumph.
