Maurice "Morrie" McHugh made his All Blacks debut on 1946 in a two-Test series against Australia - appearing in both games as a flanker - but had to wait a further three years for his third and final Test cap on the 1949 tour to South Africa.
In South Africa he appeared in 13 of the 25 tour matches, mostly as a lock but played at No.8 in the 3rd test. He retired from first class rugby after the tour but turned out for the Barbarians for some years and for the Hamilton City club 1955-57.
As well as representing Auckland in 1936, 1937 and 1944 he was also selected for both the North Island and the New Zealand XV that played Combined Services. He appeared again for all those sides in 1945.
As a boxer he won the New Zealand amateur heavyweight championship in 1938 and was runner up in 1947.
