Profile

Uttley played 23 games for England between 1973 and 1980 captaining the side on five occasions. He was also a member of the 1974 Lions squad that went undefeated in South Africa - featuring in all four Tests.

Originally selected as a lock, he would go on to play in the backrow in a formidable combination alongside Irishman Fergus Slattery and Wales' Mervyn Davies.

He was also assistant coach to the 1989 Lions side that won their Test series against Australia and would later, along with Geoff Cooke, steer England to the 1991 Rugby World Cup Final where they were beaten by Australia.

In 1997 he became the England manager and a year later, along with coach Clive Woodward, oversaw the infamous 'tour of Hell' during which the side suffered a record defeat to Australia and further losses to New Zealand and South Africa.

He was shown the door by the Rugby Football Union in 1999 as part of a cost-cutting drive by new chief executive Francis Baron.

Born in Blackpool, he played his club rugby for Fylde, Gosforth and Wasps and balanced his rugby interests with a career as a Physical Education teacher at Harrow School where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 2008.

Awarded an OBE in 1991, he is a former President of the Sparks charity and an honorary member of Wooden Spoon.
