A diminutive fly-half, Stuart Barnes captained Wales Schools before heading to Oxford where he won three Blues, captaining the side in his final year against Rob Andrew's side. He played his club rugby for Newport while at university before switching to Bristol after he graduated. In the days before professionalism, he worked for a time at the Bristol & West Building Society.

After domestic success with Bristol, he controversially switched to Bath where he remained, eventually captaining them to English rugby's first league and cup double. In the season before the move he made his England debut, but that he only made ten appearances over the next nine years was more to the selectors' preference for Andrew. He retired after touring South Africa in 1994, partially because of a groin injury, although frustration probably played a part in his decision.

By then he already had started another career in journalism and on retiring he quit the building society and went full-time into writing as well as broadcasting, initially with the BBC but later with Sky Sports.
