The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has cooled reports that Springbok coach Peter De Villiers is part of a consortium that has purchased shares in the Boland Rugby Union, an eventuality that would jeopardise his position.

According to reports in Afrikaans newspaper Rapport, De Villiers was part of a company called Game Plan that had bought 50% shares in the union.

The newspaper also alleged that Bulls lock Victor Matfield, singer Kurt Darren and Paarl businessman Renier Swart were part of the group and had paid five million rand (£450,000) for their stake.

"Media are advised that Springbok coach Peter De Villiers was approached to become part of a consortium to purchase shares in the Boland Rugby Union," read a SARU statement. "He reported the approach to SARU president, Oregan Hoskins, but no transaction has taken place.

"Hoskins and De Villiers are both overseas at the moment and a meeting will be held to discuss the proposal on their return."
