Montauban have been demoted from the Top 14 by the financial watchdog DNACG.

The club were called before the panel along with Stade Francais and Bourgoin, who will not face further action, and were unable to provide evidence that they could clear their reported €1.7m financial shortfall within the confines of their season budget.

Officials are able to appeal the decision prior to the next meeting of the council on May 4 but the club's investors are allegedly reluctant to plunge further cash into the club.

The club are currently 11th in the Top 14 table but face automatic administrative relegation to Pro D2 unless their financial ailments are remedied.

Albi have already been relegated from the division, winning only three games this season, and Montauban are locked in a dogfight along with Montpellier and Bayonne. Should the club go bankrupt they will automatically be demoted to Féderale 3 - five divisions below the top flight.
