Former London Irish and Northampton fly-half Barry Everitt has retired.

The former Ireland 'A' international, 34, notched over 1,200 Premiership points and helped Irish win the Powergen Cup in 2002. Having retired he will take up a new role as director of sport at Cranmore Preparatory School for Boys in Surrey.

"I've had an enjoyable and successful career in rugby and been fortunate to play with the leading provinces in Ireland and two famous clubs in England," he said. "Along the way, I've worked with great coaches and shared the playing field and training grounds with many talented players."

Wing Rhys Crane has been handed a chance at Sale Sharks, securing a three-month trial with the Guinness Premiership side.

"We have Mark Cueto, Ben Cohen and a new signing who will be announced next week as our front line wings, along with Paul Williams and Mathew Tait who can play wing," head coach Mike Brewer said. "Rhys is in a battle with Tom Brady from the Sale Sharks Academy and another triallist to be named tomorrow to secure that fourth wing berth."
