Saracens have suffered a double injury blow prior to the start of the new Aviva Premiership season with skipper Steve Borthwick and promising flanker Andy Saull both set to miss the opening rounds.
Borthwick has a torn quad muscle and will miss the first two weeks of the season, including the London Double Header at Twickenham.
Sarries face London Irish in the curtain raiser on September 4 and while Borthwick, who this summer was axed from Martin Johnson's England squad, is back in light training the start of the season will come too quickly.
The news is worse for Saxons openside Saull, who will miss four weeks of the season after suffering a fractured wrist in a pre-season meeting with Championship side Bedford. He will be hopeful of a return prior to Sarries' opening Heineken Cup tie, away to Clermont Auvergne on October 9.
Elsewhere, Sale Sharks prop Gavin Kerr has been forced to retire by a neck injury. The former Scotland international, capped 50 times by his country, joined the Sharks from Edinburgh after previous stints at Leeds and Borders. He played at Rugby World Cups in 2003 and 2007.
