Leinster have confirmed that former fullback Girvan Dempsey has taken up the role of an Elite Player Development Officer with the province.

The 34-year-old Dubliner made 175 appearances for the Irish outfit before calling time on his playing career at the end of last season and was only too happy to continue his lengthy association with Leinster.

"Leinster's underage set-up is amongst the strongest in Europe and the challenge over the coming years will be in maintaining and improving the standards as well as the playing numbers," he said.

Dempsey will be joined in his new role by Wayne Mitchell, who was formerly working at Leinster as a Coach Development Officer.

"The challenge will be to identify the right players and create an environment for these players to compete at the highest level," he said. "A lot of time and energy has already been invested in player development and this year we have moved a year backwards so as to identify players at Under-16 level, which opens the door further for players to have more opportunities to come through the system.

"I am excited by this opportunity to work with the next batch of underage players and it is an honour to be recruited as part of Leinster's established pathway for developing coaches within the provincial system."
