Argentina survived a late fightback from Italy to claim a 22-16 victory over the Azzurri in Verona on Saturday afternoon.

The two sides were locked together on six points apiece at the interval, with Italy wing Mirco Bergamasco and Pumas fly-half Felipe Contepomi both having landed two penalties.

The Pumas struck a decisive blow ten minutes into the second half when fullback Martin Rodriguez touched down.

Bergamasco kept Italy in touch with a penalty but Contepomi then replied with two of his own to put ten points between the sides.

However, Argentina lock Mariano Galarza saw yellow on 76 minutes and Italy immediately took advantage, forcing their visitors into the concession of a penalty try which was promptly converted by Bergamasco.

The Azzurri poured forward in the closing stages but 14-man Argentina held firm before sealing victory when Contepomi landed another kick on goal in the dying seconds.
