Mirco Bergamasco kicked all 24 points for Italy as they came from behind to defeat Fiji 24-16 in Modena on Saturday.
The Italy winger's accuracy from made up for the hosts' lack of potency with ball in hand as they reeled in Fiji's 16-9 half-time lead to seal only their third win in their last 24 Tests.
Hooker Talemaitoga Taupati forced his way over from close range after a succession of pick-and-gos from Fiji to give them an early lead. Seremaia Bai converted the score but Italy hit back with two penalties from Bergamasco.
Bai, who answered a late call for his country following an injury to Exeter's Josh Matavesi, was on target with three penalties to preserve the visitors' lead into half-time. But Bergamasco's third penalty kick kept Italy within seven.
And Fiji failed to take advantage of Martin Castrogiovanni's visit to the sin bin, as Italy closed the gap with another Bergamasco penalty while they were a man down. Italy continued reel in Fiji and they took an 18-16 lead following two further penalties from Bergamasco.
Despite bringing on a host of substitutes, Fiji could not find a way back into the match. Two late penalties from Bergamasco confirmed the win.
