Former All Black Liam Barry has taken over as coach of North Harbour following the sackings of Craig Dowd and Jeff Wilson.

Wilson has earned a reprieve and will serve as Barry's assistant during next year's Championship campaign - Harbour having finished 11th in this season's ITM Cup.

Barry will first complete his duties with the Blues during next year's Super Rugby season, having served the franchise as an assistant since 2006.

"Liam's strong leadership skills, coaching experience and long-time affiliation with the region stood out for the interview panel amongst a high quality field of applicants," North Harbour CEO Brett Hollister said.

Barry played 83 games for North Harbour following his debut as a teenager in 1991, winning his one All Black cap against France at Parc des Princes in 1995. He then spent seven years playing in Japan before linking up with Hawke's Bay as a technical advisor.

Barry's family also has a special place in New Zealand rugby as he followed his father Kevin and grandfather Ned into an All Black jersey.
