Sweeney happy with Blues despite French interest

Ceri Sweeney has revealed that he never entertained the idea of leaving the Cardiff Blues - despite interest from clubs in France.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, there had been a fear within the region that the 30-year-old fly-half might be tempted by a stint abroad.

However, Sweeney subsequently decided to put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Blues, insisting that it has always been his intention to remain in the Welsh capital.

"I am pretty settled. I didn't see any point of moving to England or France at this stage when everything I want is at the Blues," he told Wales on Sunday. "Apparently there was some interest in France, but it didn't even get to looking at a deal or having one on the table."

Sweeney, who is currently preparing for Monday's Magners League meeting with former club Newport Gwent Dragons, also revealed that he intends to end his career with the Blues.

"I just cannot see myself signing for another Welsh region," he said. "I think anywhere else in Wales would be a step down for me. The facilities, the support structure, the new stadium and the squad is there. They have new players coming through and it's just a good place to go to work."
