Chapman cops ban for Cipriani slap

Brumbies flanker Mitchell Chapman has been handed a one-week ban for striking Danny Cipriani during the Melbourne Rebels' history first Super Rugby win.

The Rebels won 25-24 in a match which also saw them score their first points and first try and the pain of the last-minute defeat has been compounded for the Brumbies with the loss of Chapman for next week's clash with the Reds in Canberra.

Chapman was punished for lashing out at Cipriani, who later kicked the winning points for Melbourne, in the 10th minute.

"SANZAR Judicial Officer Campbell Thomson, who heard the case this morning, upheld the charge, ruling that Chapman had connected near the right eye of Cipriani, recklessly striking the Rebels player with an open left hand," a SANZAR statement said.

In other suspension news, Hurricanes centre Ma'a Nonu seems stuck on 99 Super rugby matches after his one-week ban was pushed forward to round four following the 'Canes' cancelled fixture against the Crusaders.

Nonu was banned for a shoulder charge in round one but he will spend almost a month without playing due to the cancelled round two fixture (which was declared a draw in the wake of the Christchurch earthquake), the Hurricanes' bye in round three and the suspension he will now serve against the Chiefs in round four.
