Waratahs skipper Phil Waugh believes his side's title hopes are back on track after a last gasp win over the Brumbies on Saturday.

The win has also gone some way to make up for the New South Wales side's abysmal showing against the Cheetahs from South Africa last week. Waugh was pleased with how his team was able to regroup after such a disappointing performance and come away with a win.

"Last week was very disappointing," he said. "It's obviously been a tough week. We played very poorly last week and to turn it around it was obviously a big week for us, coming down here is a big challenge.

"The Brumbies had their backs against the wall, we certainly had our backs against the wall and to respond the way we did down here in Canberra was pretty pleasing."

The Waratahs' performance was vastly in contrast to their last start against the Cheetahs where apparent poor attitudes led to their fans booing them off the pitch at the Sydney Football Stadium. Waugh stressed the importance to the team of winning back the support of their fans.

"We were really disappointed with the performance last week, in a lot of ways it was out of character in the way we played," he said. "I think the most important thing is to show the fans how spirited the group is and hope fully that spirit is felt by the supporters and when we go back to Sydney on Friday that the supporters get behind us."

Coach Chris Hickey was also very pleased with the attitude shown by his team, especially their ability to bounce back after a controversial disallowed try from Afa Pakalani.

"I thought it was just great determination and will to front up at that next scrum to manage to turn the ball round and then to be able to get over the line with the ball," he said.

The Waratahs will look to continue their winning form in their next match on Friday against the Chiefs from Waikato.
