Newcastle have announced the signing of Michael Mayhew, the younger brother of Falcons back-row Richard.

Mayhew Junior, who is a hooker by trade, arrives at Kingston Park from North Harbour and he is expected to be joined on Tyneside by South African centre Corne Uys in the coming weeks.

Commenting on his new signing, Falcons boss Alan Tait said: "I've looked at the videos of him playing for North Harbour and he is a quality player.

"We need cover at hooker and the signing of Michael means we will not be exposed in that area. His brother had a great game on Saturday, against Bath, and he will want to prove himself in a Falcons jersey."

The 24-year-old Mayhew, meanwhile, is hoping to adapt to life in the Aviva Premiership as easily as his sibling.

"It's good to see him again and he looks like he's out of the Lion King with that haircut," he joked. "I can't wait to get stuck in and try my best. I've been really impressed with the whole set-up and it's very professional and welcoming.

"It's great to finally arrive and it has been a very long flight," he said. "I'm very much looking forward to getting amongst it."
