Worcester Warriors have been dealt a huge blow with the news that outside centre Alex Crockett has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old suffered a serious knee injury against former side Bath last weekend and scans have revealed that he has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament and will have surgery next week. And with his contract up in the summer, Crockett faces a battle to prove to coach Richard Hill that he is worthy of a new deal.

Worcester have won just two of their first six games in the 2011-12 Aviva Premiership season and Hill will call upon experience within the squad for the stricken outside centre rather than looking elsewhere for a replacement.

"We are all hugely disappointed for Crocks as he had just worked himself into some good form and had featured in the Premiership for us this season and played in the recent Anglo-Welsh cup encounters," Hill told Worcester News. "We now wish him well with his recovery under the guidance of the medical and rehabilitation staff at Sixways.

"It is a blow for us, but we are lucky to have good depth in that area of the squad. Dale Rasmussen and Alex Grove have performed strongly for us in the league and we also have Sione Tu'ipulotu, Chris Pennell and Tom Arscott who can play in that position.

"Our new signing Ravai Fatiaki is joining us soon, so we are not looking to recruit. Young players like Andy Short and Charlie Hayter are also keen to impress and this will give them more opportunities for senior rugby."
