Bordeaux-Begles boss Marc Delpoux will leave the Top 14 club at the end of the season with a reports suggesting he is set to take charge of rivals Perpignan.
The 48-year-old former Perpignan player, who steered Bordeaux/Begles into France's top flight last season, confirmed his intention to quit the club following yesterday's 39-6 victory over Stade Francais.
Bordeaux-Begles president Laurent Marti made the announcement but wouldn't be drawn as to his replacement with reports linking former France captain Raphael Ibanez with the general manager post. "Marc Delpoux is leaving us soon. Marc has participated in the development of the club, but he prefers to leave for another project which I totally understand," said Marti.
"That is the nature of professional rugby, when I hired Marc he was unemployed, and we gave him his chance. He has evolved in extremely favourable conditions, in a healthy atmosphere and a well-balanced club, in a town that wasn't supportive in our bad moments and who supported us in our good ones."
Marti also stressed that the club would still boast some strong coaching talent. "One thing that should not be overlooked, with Vincent Etcheto, Laurent Armand and Ludovic Loustau, we have a staff of highly quality, which contributes to the success of this team."
Delpoux, who also coached Calvisano to the 2008 Italian title, is hotly tipped to fill the void left by Jacques Delmas at Perpignan. The former Biarritz and Stade Francais coach parted company with the club back in November after just 12 games in charge with assistant coaches Bernard Goutta and Christophe Manas taking over the reins. However, Delpoux refused to confirm a switch to the Catalan side was imminent.
"That is certainly the rumour doing the rounds," he said. "I had the privilege this year to have several contacts regarding a job. It is for me to finalise my new destination in the coming weeks."
