The Blues' frustrating start to the new Super Rugby season has been further compounded with the news that Jerome Kaino and Rudi Wulf will not travel with the squad to South Africa.

The Blues slumped to their second successive defeat as they lost 29-14 to the Chiefs on Friday. Winger Wulf has suffered a grade two AC joint injury and is expected to be out of action for three or four weeks while Kaino is suffering from a left shoulder injury.

The All Blacks flanker will miss the Blues' clash with the Bulls next weekend but could travel out later next week to prepare for the match with the Stormers. Peter Saili will travel with the squad as loose-forward cover.

Blues head coach Pat Lam said: "It's a big blow but that's just the nature of the game.

"Obviously our game was disappointing, particularly in the first half and it's a blow for us to lose Wulf and Kaino but every team is going to have to deal with injuries and we're no different.

"We've just got to trust the squad, get over there, re-group and bounce back. We know a lot of people are disappointed but we're the ones to sort this out."
