Gloucester's Aviva Premiership play-off ambitions have been dented by a serious injury to prop Nick Wood.

The 29-year-old has been one of the Cherry and Whites' most consistent performers this season, but will miss the next four months of action due to a torn pectoral muscle.

Wood, who represented England Saxons this campaign, underwent surgery on Tuesday after suffering the injury in a heavy defeat to Leicester on March 4.

Meanwhile, Gloucester have confirmed the signing of Tongan international Sione Kalamafoni from Nottingham.

The 23-year-old flanker will make the switch at the start of next season, having made a big impression during last year's Rugby World Cup. He started three of Tonga's Pool matches and was named Man of the Match in their upset victory over France.

"I'm delighted that Sione has agreed to join us as he's proved himself to be one of the standout players in the Championship, there was a lot of interest in him," Gloucester boss Bryan Redpath said.

"He's a big, athletic back-rower who is comfortable running with ball in hand but also a physical presence in defence. He's proven himself to be a capable performer at international level and we think he's got what it takes to make a real impression in the Aviva Premiership."
