The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) has opened talks with the City of Cape Town over a possible switch to Cape Town Stadium.

The union's Currie Cup side and the Stormers Super Rugby franchise currently play at the iconic Newlands venue, but WPRFU president Tobie Titus has confirmed that it may not stay that way.

In a joint briefing with Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille, Titus admitted that formal discussions had opened over a possible move, although the process is set to take "years".

Cape Town Stadium, situated on the site of the city's old Green Point ground, hosted matches at the 2010 Fifa World Cup and holds over 50,000 fans. Newlands has been the home of Western Province rugby since 1890, but has shown signs of wear in recent years.

"It is not an overnight issue. People need to have patience and respect the process we have embarked on. It is not going to be a matter of months ... it will be years," Titus said.

"I never said we would never move. It's not in my lap to decide whether we go or not. We must go with facts to our constituency, our 90 clubs."
