Trimble claims Ireland 'gave in'

Ireland winger Andrew Trimble lamented his side's poor showing against England claiming that they "gave in".

The Irish were demolished in the scrum and imploded in an abject second half that allowed England to turn a 9-6 interval lead into an easy victory. Trimble believes his side surrendered in an excruciating trip to Twickenham.

"We let them get in the ascendancy and it's very disappointing that we didn't hit back," the Ulster wing said. "It felt like we were on the receiving end of everything and we didn't show enough fight.

"It seemed like we were caving in and it's very difficult to hear yourself say this, but it felt like we gave in. That feeling hurts."

Ireland finished third in the championship and will now look to their summer tour to New Zealand - where they will play three Tests against the All Blacks - with trepidation. Trimble has urged his team-mates to recall the pain of yesterday's defeat when they face the reigning world champions.

"This is disappointing. Two wins and a draw isn't good enough. We're a lot better than that," he said. "Three Tests against the All Blacks are always daunting. I'm hoping that while being on the receiving end of that result yesterday was horrible, it will push us on to never be here again."

Ireland are waiting to see if citing officer Alberto Recaldini takes action over an accusation by flanker Stephen Ferris that he was bitten during the first half. Ferris protested to referee Nigel Owens, who claimed he did not see the incident, and then received treatment.

Neither coach Declan Kidney nor captain Rory Best would elaborate on the incident yesterday.
