Western Force playmaker James Stannard has been sidelined for six weeks with an ankle injury.

The former Australia Sevens international picked up the knock in last weekend's Super Rugby victory over the Reds in Perth.

He will undergo surgery on Thursday, when a pin will be inserted in his ankle, leaving Richard Graham light at fly-half.

Ben Seymour starts in the No.10 jersey against the Chiefs on Friday night, while Josh Holmes, the former Waratahs and Brumbies scrum-half, is among the replacements after signing a short-term deal.

The Reds have fly-half issues of their own after last weekend's comprehensive loss, with coach Ewen McKenzie turning to 21-year-old academy member Sam Lane for this weekend's meeting with the Brumbies.

Lane, the son of former Wallabies centre Tim, will make his Super Rugby debut after several years with Western Province in South Africa. He is joined in the starting side by Aidan Toua, who runs on at outside-centre.
