Willie Mason has completed his return back to rugby league after a disappointing stint in rugby union.

The controversial figure switched to union last year and turned out for the Barbarians against both England and then Wales. Top 14 Orange side Toulon signed him but Mason played in just two pre-season matches and one league game for the side.

Rumours in December suggested that Mason had left Toulon and reports in Australia now claim he will play in the NRL for the Newcastle Knights. Mason could make his debut for the side on Saturday with the Sydney Morning Herald claiming he is now down to his optimum playing weight.

"I am grateful that Wayne [Bennett] and the club have shown confidence in me and I will not be wasting the opportunity to not only perform on the field but to contribute to the Knights' strong community programmes," Mason said. "I am aware that I still have plenty of hard work ahead of me to earn a spot in the NRL team but it is great to be home and playing in front of my family, friends and the Newcastle community."
