Former Bristol head coach and No. 8 Dean Ryan is to return to the Championship club in a consultancy role.

Ryan played 45 times for the Memorial Stadium side and coached the team to the 2001-02 Premiership final before he left the club to coach Gloucester. He will work with Bristol for one day a week, primarily with the board of directors and head coach Liam Middleton.

"I am delighted to be renewing my relationship with Bristol Rugby, who gave me the opportunity to take my first steps into coaching," Ryan said. "I hope the experience that I've gained in a number of different environments will now be of assistance to the Club in its quest to return to the top flight."

Bristol was Ryan's final club in a playing career that also included stints at Saracens, London Wasps and Newcastle. He won four caps for England but has been working in the media since he left Gloucester in June 2009.

"I believe the appointment of Dean as a Consultant to the Club will be a great asset for us," said Bristol chairman Chris Booy. "I'm confident Dean's vast experience and knowledge of Rugby will provide a real benefit throughout the 2012/13 RFU Championship season."
