Wales back-row Ryan Jones has been ruled out of his side's clash with Argentina on Saturday due to a shoulder injury.

The Ospreys flanker flew home from Wales' training camp in Spala, Poland, last week for scans on the shoulder which had been troubling him over recent weeks. Wales medical staff have since decided the 31-year-old requires a "further period of rest in order to fully recover from the problem".

As a result, he has been ruled out of the clash with the Pumas but he is expected to be fit in time for Wales date with Samoa on November 16.

The news is a fresh blow to Wales with Dragons flanker Dan Lydiate and Ospreys prop Adam Jones set to miss the entire end of year campaign - that also includes matches against New Zealand and Australia - with long-term ankle and knee injuries respectively.

Caretaker coach Rob Howley is set to name his side to face Argentina tomorrow with a shake-up to the pack likely that may see captain Sam Warburton switched to blindside the possible introduction of either the Scarlets' Aaron Shingler or the Ospreys' Justin Tipuric.

Wales assistant coach Robin McBryde said: "We took the decision out in Poland, we were aware Ryan had a niggle with his shoulder coming out to Poland so we thought it would be wise to get in there early and investigate if it was anything serious.

"Happily enough that isn't the case, but it is a case of doing quite a bit of rehab work for the remainder of this week in order for him to be fit for next week's match against Samoa, which is positive news."

"We were aware Ryan had a niggle with his shoulder coming out to Poland, so we thought it would be wise to get in there early and investigate if it was anything serious," forwards coach McBryde said.

Pressed on the possibility of a re-jigged back-row that could feature both Warburton and Tipuric, he added: "When you have got two quality players at openside as we have in the squad, you can't discount it.

"Both Justin and Sam are hugely effective in their own different ways, and they could complement each other. It is definitely one we wouldn't throw out straightaway. Hopefully, our hand isn't forced, but should we have to go down that route then I am confident that we could be as effective and mould our game around that combination."
