North injury worry for Wales

Scarlets winger George North has handed Wales a major injury concern ahead of the Six Nations opener against Ireland next month.

The 20-year-old was stretchered from the field during the Scarlets' 47-15 RaboDirect PRO12 defeat to Ulster on Friday night following a heavy blow to his head. As a result he faces a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of Wales' clash with Ireland at the Millennium Stadium on February 2.

Scarlets backs coach Mark Jones told BBC Sport: "I only know what I saw on the replay. He's had a knee to the head and he's struggling with some head and neck issues."

North joins a worrying Wales injury list that also includes fly-half Rhys Priestland who has already been ruled out of the Six Nations with a torn Achilles that also looks likely to sideline him for the for the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia in the summer.

Also causing an injury headache for caretaker Wales coach Rob Howley, who will take charge of the side as Warren Gatland concentrates on his Lions duties, are props Craig Mitchell and Aaron Jarvis, hookers Huw Bennett and Ken Owens, locks Alun Wyn Jones, Ian Evans and Luke Charteris and flanker Dan Lydiate.
