Ulster's Paddy Jackson has edged out Leinster's Ian Madigan to serve as Ireland's reserve fly-half for the Six Nations clash with Scotland on Sunday.

First-choice No.10 Jonathan Sexton picked up a hamstring injury in the defeat to England earlier this month with Ronan O'Gara stepping into the void. The veteran playmaker is set to retain the role at Murrayfield in what is set to be his first start since the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Coach Declan Kidney has included 21-year-old Jackson in his latest training squad as O'Gara's back-up despite the fact that scrum-half Ruan Pienaar is Ulster's usual goalkicker. In contrast, the 23-year-old Madigan, who was part of the training squad in the autumn, landed four from five kicks in Leinster's latest PRO12 victory on Saturday night.

The defeat to England took a significant toll on Kidney's squad with winger Simon Zebo, lock Mike McCarthy and centre Gordon D'Arcy suffering injuries. In addition, prop Cian Healy picked up a citing that led to a three-week ban that will sideline him for Ireland's next two Six Nations fixtures with Ulster's Tom Court added to the squad. Ulster flanker Chris Henry is another injury concern having injured his knee in the PRO12 clash with Zebre.

Ireland training squad: Rory Best, Darren Cave, Tom Court, Sean Cronin, James Coughlan, Keith Earls, Luke Fitzgerald, Declan Fitzpatrick, Craig Gilroy, Robin Henshaw, Jamie Heaslip, Ian Henderson, Chris Henry, Paddy Jackson, Rob Kearney, David Kilcoyne, Luke Marshall, Fergus McFadden, Conor Murray, Sean O'Brien, Donncha O'Callaghan, Brian O'Driscoll, Ronan O'Gara, Peter O'Mahony, Eoin Reddan, Mike Ross, Donnacha Ryan, Lewis Stevenson, Devin Toner
