The Blues have been dealt more bad news with the loss of All Blacks prop Charlie Faumuina for six weeks to injury.

Faumuina, who has played seven Tests for the All Blacks, suffered a grade two calf strain on his right calf midway through the first half of Sunday's 27-30 loss to the Waratahs in Sydney.

It's understood Faumuina will have an ultrasound scan on Tuesday but is expected to be unavailable for six weeks.

It's a disappointing outcome for the Blues, who started the season with two convincing victories before being downed by the Bulls and the Waratahs in their previous two matches.

Replacement prop Angus Ta'avao, who came on for Faumuina in last week's defeat, shapes as the most likely contender to fill the prop's big shoes.

He'll do so against the defending champion Chiefs when the two sides clash at Baypark Stadium in Mount Maunganui on Saturday night.
