Conrad Smith has overcome a heel injury and will captain the Hurricanes against the Southern Kings at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.

The All Blacks centre and half-back TJ Perenara each proved his fitness to play during a training session on Thursday to boost a Hurricanes side already bolstered by returning hooker Dane Coles. Perenara had been in doubt with a calf injury.

Four-Test All Blacks hooker Coles had previously been named to return after two weeks out with an ankle strain, welcome news to a team that had run so low on fit rakes that it had called up former Highlanders player Jason Rutledge from Southland. Usual replacement Motu Matu'u needs more time to nurse a shoulder injury so wider training group hooker Ash Dixon provides back-up from the bench.

Jeffery Toomaga-Allen (sternum) and Blade Thomson (ankle) remain unavailable for selection due to injury.

Hurricanes: Andre Taylor; Alapati Leiua, Conrad Smith (captain), Tim Bateman, Julian Savea; Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara; Victor Vito, Karl Lowe, Brad Shields; Jason Eaton, Jeremy Thrush; Ben May, Dane Coles, Ben Franks. Replacements: Ash Dixon, Reggie Goodes, Mark Reddish, Faifili Levave, Chris Smylie, Tusi Pisi, Rey Lee-Lo.
