Western Force scrum-back Chris Eaton is putting his Super Rugby career on hold following the death of his wife in a car crash.

The former Hurricanes player, 29, will remain in Hawke's Bay for the rest of the season to concentrate on raising the couple's four-year-old daughter, Layla, he told Woman's Day.

"I've told the Force I won't be coming back. At least for this year, we'll stay here. It's too hard to move away with the support here," he said.

Hannah Eaton, 25, was killed at Easter in a head on collision between Paeroa and Thames.

Eaton said he wanted to raise their daughter the way his wife would have liked.
