Pierre Spies will miss the remainder of the season after tearing a biceps muscle playing for South Africa against Samoa in the final of the Quadrangular Tournament on Saturday, dealing a massive blow to the Bulls' hopes of winning a fourth Super Rugby title. Spies will undergo surgery on Tuesday after seeing specialists, one each in Johannesburg and Pretoria, for opinion and ultrasound scans. Bulls team doctor Org Strauss said the surgery will rule Spies out for the remainder of the season, including the Rugby Championship and the Springboks' end-of-year tour to Europe. The Bulls, eight points clear of the Cheetahs atop the South African Super Rugby conference, and third behind the Brumbies and the Chiefs in the overall standings, have not announced who will take the captaincy in Spies' absence.
