Player dies after brain bleed
July 24, 2013

An Auckland club rugby player has died in hospital after suffering a head injury during a match on Saturday.

Takapuna player Willie Halaifonua, 27, had just been named player of the day following his team's loss to Massey at a North Shore park when he collapsed, unconscious. He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital unconscious and underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, the New Zealand Herald reported.

However, he died in hospital on Tuesday night.

Halaifonua reportedly suffered a brain bleed after clashing heads with a Massey player a minute before the end of the match.
