Bristol have announced that second-row Peter Buxton has retired from professional rugby.

The lock made 273 appearances for Gloucester after joining them in 2002 from Newport. He had signed for Bristol ahead of this season but the club released a statement on Monday saying he had been released "from his contract with immediate effect". As yet, no reason has been given for Buxton's decision to retire.

Buxton was one part of Bristol's big recruitment drive ahead of the forthcoming campaign with the club bringing in the likes of ex-Wales fly-half Nicky Robinson, No.8 Ben Skirving and experienced lock Mark Sorenson.
