Murray wants to be 'best in the world'

Munster scrum-half Conor Murray has set his sights on becoming one of the best No.9s in the world.

Fresh from helping the British & Irish Lions to an historic series victory over Australia last month, Murray is determined to use it as the stepping stone to further success with his province and Ireland with the 2015 World Cup his next major goal.

"I want to go to that competition as one of the best scrum-halves in the world," he told the Irish Independent. "I have that self-belief from the Lions tour and want to grow my game to become one of the best scrum-halves in Europe this season and then grow again for the World Cup in England the following season.

"You don't need a big tour or something like the Lions to aim for in order to have goals. I have personal goals that I won't share but I have no problem highlighting that one. I want to evolve my game to that level."

The 24-year-old is aware that he must first earn the respect of new Munster coach Rob Penney and new Ireland coach Joe Schmidt. "There is a lot of nervous tension around with a new coach," he said. "People know they have to impress. The coaches told us that selection for November will be based on form.

"I was that way with Rob (Penney) at Munster last season. You have to prove yourself with every new coach. With Ireland, like with Munster, it will come down to who is going the best in every position. Where they play their club rugby won't come into it."
