The Brumbies took the inaugural World Club 7s tournament beating Auckland 17-14 in the final at Twickenham.
The Brumbies booked their place in the final thanks to a 26-7 win over Buenos Aires in the semi-final with tries from Matthew Hawke, Stephen Van der Walt (two) and Henry Speight. And their opponents Auckland got through with a 31-14 win over Harlequins in the last four thanks to scores from Varasiko Duisokosoko (two), Melani Vai, Tutu Tairea and Rocky Khan.
And it was the Australians who scored first in the final with Tom Cox going in from halfway, outpacing three of the Auckland players. Henry Speight then added another and the Brumbies had a commanding 12-0 lead at the break.
But in the second 40, it was Auckland who started the better of the teams with Kalu Hala profiting from a spilled ball to dart over. And just moments later, Hala went over again, this time under the posts, and with the conversion, Auckland had turned the match on its head and took a 14-12 lead with two minutes left. But it was the Brumbies who stole the title in the last minute as Speight went over in the corner to secure a 17-14 triumph in the inaugural tournament.
Buenos Aires went on to finish third in the tournament dispatching Harlequins 33-7 for the honour in the play-off -. Ezequiel Valy, Santiago Alvarez, Lucas Alcacer (two) and Gonzalo Gutuerrez Taboda scored. The plate went to New York as they eased past Gloucester 33-7 while VVA Saracens finished seventh and San Francisco eighth. And Russian side Kuban Krasnodar took the shield beating the Blue Bulls in the final 19-12 with their tries coming through Evgeny Nepeyvoda, Eduard Filatov and Ivan Kotov.
