Toulon have announced the signing of former Springboks flanker Juan Smith on a one-year deal.

Smith arrives at the club as a 'medical joker' and will attempt to force his way into a back-row which includes Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, Steffon Armitage, Joe van Niekerk and Danie Rossouw.

The announcement caps a remarkable shift in fortunes for Smith who retired from the sport in 2011 due to an Achilles injury but then worked with a doctor who corrected the problem and Smith has since got back to full fitness.

And Smith is relishing the chance to line-up alongside a number of his fellow South Africans with Van Niekerk, Bryan Habana, Bakkies Botha, Rossouw and Michael Claassens all at the club.

"It's great for me to sign for Toulon as I have friends at the club. Coming here was an easy decision to make," Smith said. "I am ready to get playing now and it is up to the coaches for when they decide to pick me."
