Wales look set to be without Jamie Roberts for the autumn Tests and the centre admits he will be out of action for a "good number of months".
Roberts picked up an ankle injury playing for new side Racing Metro against Perpignan on September 8 placing his chances of running out for Wales in the end-of-year internationals in jeopardy. The centre has now returned to Cardiff to undergo surgery.
Wales open their four-Test programme against South Africa on November 9 and then face Argentina seven days later. They play Tonga on November 22 and then Australia on November 30. But Roberts is a major injury doubt for the four Tests.
Racing coach Laurent Labit said: "Jamie has reported back to us after 10 days in Cardiff for the operation. He will be out for at least two months after surgery and will hopefully be back playing some time in November, but he will probably miss the Wales Tests."
But Roberts is hopeful of making a miracle recovery to be fit in time. "The doctors seem to think I'll be out for a good few months," Roberts told BBC Wales. "But I will be working on my rehab, trying my best to be fit for selection."
