Cardiff Blues are reportedly hoping to secure the services of Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards on a part-time basis.

The Blues, who suffered a shock defeat to the previous win-less Zebre last weekend, are set to lose backs coach Gareth Baber at the end of the year and Edwards has emerged as the favourite to fill the void in director of rugby Phil Davies' coaching set-up.

The Western Mail reports that the Blues are set to ask the Welsh Rugby Union for permission to use Edwards on the understanding that any working relationship does not impact on his work with the national side.

Edwards has previously served Premiership side London Irish and Cambridge University on a part-time basis and any new post would require approval from Wales coach Warren Gatland.

Blues chief executive Richard Holland told the newspaper that the region would consider a range of applicants but he also admitted that they will talk to Gatland on the subject.

"The recruitment process has begun and several names have already come forward and expressed an interest," said Holland. "We intend to work closely with Warren Gatland and our own internal staff to ensure that whoever we bring in is of the right calibre to bring success to this region."

The Blues' defence is currently orchestrated by former London Broncos coach Rob Powell who was brought in last October to replace Xavier Rush.
