Former Scotland centre Joe McPartlin has died after a long illness at the age of 75.

Born in West Hartlepool to Glaswegian parents, McPartlin, who won six caps between 1960 and 1962, was described by Norman Mair in The Scotsman as "the complete centre-three-quarter; master of the half-break and the perfectly timed pass".

His international appearances came while he was at Oxford University where he won Blues in 1960, 1961 and, as captain, 1962. He also played for Harlequins, Oxford, Oxfordshire, Surrey, the Army and the Barbarians and after retiring took up refereeing.

Off the field he was a teacher at St Edmund's School in Oxford.
