Sale have finally signed Tongan No. 8 Viliami Fihaki from New Zealand provincial side North Harbour, ending several months of rumour and frustration.

Fihaki, 26, has signed a three-year deal with the club and he arrived in the UK yesterday.

"Vilaimi's a really good ball carrier and we're delighted he has agreed to join us," , Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond told the Manchester Evening News. "He could have delayed coming here and gone with Tonga on their Autumn tour of Europe but instead he's opted to join up with us straight away, which is a great boost for us.

"We had been looking for another back row player all summer and we identified Viliami playing over in New Zealand for North Harbour in the ITM Cup and he comes highly-recommended from our contacts over there."

Diamond said the club was on the lookout for more signings. "We're in in-depth talks now as regards the re-signing of our current squad and from January 1 we'll be in the market place for three or four other new signings. There are certain positions we will be particularly looking at in terms of a tight head prop, a scrum-half and a back three player.

"The regulations state you can't approach people before January 1 and we'll abide by that, but we are drawing up our plans for going forward."
