Saracens and England centre Joel Tomkins is facing three months out of action after picking up a knee injury while on international duty.

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall revealed the news after his side's 16-9 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park, with Tomkins a notable absentee from the squad. England kick off their Six Nations campaign against France on February 1 next year and if McCall's assessment is correct Tomkins could well be set to miss out.

McCall said: "Joel has got a knee injury, and will be out for quite some time, probably three months.

"He picked up the injury in the last five minutes of the game against New Zealand and it is a maximum 12-week injury."
