Wales lock Ian Evans has been hit with a 12-week ban and will now miss the Six Nations.

Evans was shown a straight red for stamping on Mike McCarthy during the first-half of Friday night's game between the Ospreys and Leinster.

The panel which heard Evans' hearing on Thursday, deemed the offence to be at the top end of the spectrum and he will be free to play again on April 21, 2014.

"In upholding the red card decision, the Judicial Officer stated that the incident involved at least two stamps which connected with McCarthy's head and which resulted in a serious facial wound," the ERC statement read.

The panel also noted "there was no place in the game for conduct of this kind" and reduced the original suspension of 16 weeks down to 12 "due to the player's guilty plea, good conduct and remorse during the hearing".

Evans has right of appeal.
