Worcester director of rugby Dean Ryan insists his side can still avoid relegation, despite sitting 12 points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership with only five matches remaining.

The Warriors came within a whisker of their first victory of the season against Wasps on Friday, only for the visitors to snatch a late try to win 13-11.

But Ryan was in a defiant mood today, telling BBC Sport: "I'm not going to let us feel sorry for ourselves. We still think we've got a chance in this. As long as it is still on mathematically, then we will still be up for it."

Worcester play second-bottom club Newcastle at Kingston Park this Sunday, with a loss for the Warriors all but relegating them to the Championship. Even if Worcester manage to end their 22-match losing streak, they will still need at least two wins from their final four matches to stand any chance of staying up.

Ryan however, is determined not to give up hope. He said: "As long as the maths still say 'yes', we'll give it a good crack. I'm sure half the North East were watching [on Friday] and would have breathed a pretty big sigh of relief.

"We needed to beat Wasps to change the dynamics of the game at Newcastle. But we will go up there this weekend to make sure we do the right thing and represent this group in the right way."
