Fiji consider Commonwealth boycott over Sevens exclusion

In the old days sporting boycotts were caused by politics, but Fiji might refuse to take part in this summer's Commonwealth Games because their rugby Sevens side cannot participate. Fiji only got the all clear to travel to the Games earlier this month after a suspension imposed in 2006 following a military coup was lifted. But that happened after draws for the team events were made and so it was too late for Fiji to be included in the Sevens competition. "Imagine Brazil going to the Olympics without its soccer team or Jamaica running at the games without world champion Usain Bolt?" a Fiji Olympic official said. "[We] will have a meeting to discuss a the boycott. We are upset by the decision by the games committee to exclude our rugby sevens and netball teams." Fiji won the silver medal in 1998 and 2002 and the bronze in 2006. © ESPN Sports Media Ltd
