Anger as Bath plans hit the buffers

Bath Rugby's plans for a major redevelopment of The Rec will have to be scaled down after an independent tribunal ruled that only land currently occupied by the club can be built on.

The tribunal overturned a proposal which had been agreed by the Charity Commission, who oversee the land close to the city centre. The club had been confident that their plans for an expanded 16,000-seater ground would be approved and are now considering an appeal.

There was an angry reaction to the news from supporters, with many slamming the decision of the three-person tribunal panel, accusing them of ruling on an aspect of the application which had not been discussed at an earlier public meeting.

The 5,000-strong pressure group the Real Friends of the Rec said it was "incredulous" at the ruling.
