The Blues injury problems at lock have escalated after former All Black Tom Donnelly was ruled out of their Super Rugby match against the Brumbies in Canberra. Donnelly didn't come off the reserve bench during their 30-12 win over the Highlanders in Auckland on Saturday, having strained his calf during the warmup.

With Culum Retallick (knee) ruled out for the season and Patrick Tuipulotu (knee) sidelined indefinitely, it leaves the sixth-placed Blues light in the second row for Friday's game. Wider squad player Tom Murday is returning from a knee injury but is likely to play club rugby this weekend.

It leaves All Blacks flanker Steven Luatua to provide cover for the only two fit locks - Liaki Moli and Hayden Triggs. A Blues medical update said veteran All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu won't be ready until at least a week 10 game against the Hurricanes next month as he recovers from a calf injury.

Half-back Jamison Gibson-Park (foot) is also targeting a return in the Hurricanes game but it will be a longer wait for first five-eighth Baden Kerr, who underwent finger surgery last week and will be unavailable for "a significant period of time".

In more positive news, the Saili brothers could both be available for selection after shaking off foot injuries. Both are expected to train this week.
