England ended up winning the plate at the Glasgow leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

After getting knocked out in the quarter-finals of the cup to Fiji, wins over Australia and then Kenya saw Simon Amor's men end up finishing in fifth.

Amor said: "Apart from the first two or three minutes of the Fiji game, we've played well today. I've been encouraged by some of the young guys, they've had more game time and we've seen them step up.

"Our execution and the technical accuracy of our tackling and passing has been much better. I'm really pleased with how the team have responded following yesterday's results."

New Zealand were the eventual overall victors as they beat first-time finalists Canada 54-7. The Kiwis are now closing in on their 12th series title as they sit 19 points ahead of South Africa heading into the final round at Twickenham next weekend.

Fiji ended up finishing in third thanks to a third place play-off win over Scotland who delighted their home support to reach the semi-finals of the cup only to be knocked out by Canada 10-7. France won the bowl, beating Argentina 20-14, while Wales saw off Japan 29-12 for the shield.
