Counties Manukau retained the Ranfurly Shield in their first challenge of the new season, scoring 10 tries in defeating Thames Valley 68-0 at ECOLight Stadium in Pukekohe.

Steelers Fullback Jared Page scored three tries in a 33-point haul as the ITM Cup Premiership team outclassed the Heartland Championship challengers in cold, wet conditions to record their fourth successful defence of the shield since they claimed the Log o' Wood from Hawke's Bay Magpies in September last year. .

No.8 Ma'ama Vaipulu bagged a double while halfback Kane Hancy, wing Toni Pulu and reserves Karl Ropati and Luke Graham also touched down. The Steelers were also awarded a penalty try.

Counties Manukau will face another Heartland opponent next Wednesday, when Meads Cup champions Mid Canterbury have their challenge.
