Teenage rugby player dies after head clash

A teenage rugby player has died after collapsing during a match in New Zealand on Saturday.

Jordan Kemp, 17, was reported to have suffered a suspected brain bleed after a head clash while playing for Otamatea Hawks against Old Boys Marist in Whangarei. He was placed in an induced coma by ambulance staff at the ground then taken to Whangarei Hospital, from where he was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital. The teenager failed to recover, however, and he was pronounced dead on Sunday.

"Jordan was a young man with a passion for life and for rugby, he was a great guy from an awesome family and will be sadly missed by all who knew him," New Zealand Rugby operations manager Greg Shipton said.

New Zealand Rugby and the Rugby Foundation are supporting Kemp's family, and counselling is being arranged for Hawks club members.
